Williams said that Holiday, 27, would be releasing a statement through her agent soon. She has spent the better part of a decade playing with the national team, a commitment that takes a lot of time and travel.

United States’ Lauren Holiday (12) heads the ball above Japan’s Nahomi Kawasumi (9) during the first half of the Federation Internationale de Football Association Women’s World Cup soccer championship in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Sunday, July 5, 2015. She helped capture the World Cup this year, as well as two gold medals.

Holiday has 130 worldwide caps and 24 worldwide goals since her national team debut in January of 2007.

Wahl tweeted: “A (happy) tearful Lauren Holiday just confirmed she’s retiring from USWNT at 27”.

Holiday scored the third goal in the 14th minute of the USA’s 5-2 triumph over Japan in the World Cup final this past Sunday, capping off her representation of her homeland in epic style.
