Lauryn Hill will ‘make it up’ to fans after short concert

In the years since her Miseducation of Lauryn Hill heyday in which the singing rapper received a whopping 10 Grammy nods (winning 5), Hill has been less than stellar with her live performance propers.

Ironically, the Atlanta date was actually a rescheduled show after Hill had cancelled a previous Atlanta concert less than 48 hours before showtime.

The musician wrote on Facebook that she doesn’t show up to concerts late because she doesn’t care, but because of the artistic process. But she said it’s not that she doesn’t care. She was accused of being “unprofessional” and when she was asked why she didn’t stick around after she was available for the soundcheck at 4pm, she just said “That’s not how I do it”.

“Sorry, I’m not buying it. She’s consistently late or a no-show”.

Hill, unwilling to let the negative comments continue, took to Facebook Sunday (May 8) to post an open letter explaining her side of the story, and says she has nothing but love and respect for her fans, the challenge is “aligning my energy with the time”.

“I don’t have an on/off switch”, she posted.

Lauryn Hill has written a tardy note for herself to fans. She is late quite a bit of the time, and sometimes the acoustics of the show are painful. And I have nothing but Love and respect for my fans. Some days we are more successful than others re time.

Many people were outraged about the situation on social media.

Our challenge is to figure out the best way to accommodate the vitality, spontaneity, and spirit that make the performances worthwhile and special to begin with, while also making that experience available and accessible to others. The audience and I should have that in common. It isn’t possible to affect people in any deep and meaningful way without putting sacrificial time in.
