LawBreakers dials up the maturity, no longer free-to-play

In a presentation at GDC 2016, Bleszinski said Lawbreakers “would not cost the $60 United States dollars for a traditional product” ; however, neither he wanted to delve deeper into details about the price.

He adds that because it’s a competitive game, balance is an extremely big focus for the development team and using a premium price helps maintain a level playing field for everyone. We now know that LawBreakers will be exclusive to Steam at launch, will no longer be free to play and features a new art style. So you should probably sit up and take notice of his new title, Lawbreakers.

There won’t be a game launcher for “Lawbreakers”, as well because it would only add more barriers for those who might want to try it.

Much like entries such as “Gears of War” that featured a dark and gritty art style, Bleszinski announced that “LawBreakers” will also have an art style to reflect his previous work – something that was noticeably absent in the original reveal trailer. Under a free-to-play model, new characters and classes would have been slowly unlocked through play or purchased through micro-transactions – an easy route to turning “free-to-play” into “pay-to-win ” .

“Being constantly compared to the current slew of colourful shooters on the market made us realise we needed to stand out from the crowd”, he said.

“The new look and feel embraces the innovative and vertical nature of our game elevated by violence, intensity and competition”, said Bleszinski. This lukewarm reception clearly had an impact on developer Boss Key Productions with the studio announcing that its original free-to-play model had been dropped in favour of a single up-front fee. Become immersed into a raging conflict between Law and Breakers across iconic locations including the boiling oceans of Santa Monica, a gravity ravaged Grand Canyon and almost unrecognizable Mount Rushmore. We’ll report on the pricing and release date information as it lands.

Lawbreakers takes place in the future, after a massive quake known as the Shattering destroyed America as we know it, drastically altering the landscape and even altering the laws of gravity itself.
