Lawmakers again fall short on overriding Gov. Christie veto
With the failure of the override attempt, Speaker Prieto took the bill down and said the Assembly revisit it another day.

Such a claim is ridiculous, and stems from Moran’s irrational loathing of both Christie and the New Hampshire primary.
The Star-Ledger, the largest newspaper in New Jersey, is jealous.
Enacting the law without Christie’s approval would require 54 votes in the Assembly, but it wound up being supporting by 51 lawmakers Thursday.
Democrats needed seven Republicans if they were to override the veto.
Four Republicans crossed the aisle to vote in favor of the override: Assemblyman Chris Brown (R-2), Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-16), Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-26), and Assemblywoman Amy Handlin (R-13).
“If everybody thought this was the best thing to do six months ago, I always say we have 80 members in this house, 40 in the Senate, 120 members”.
The New Jersey legislation would have required extra law-enforcement review of gun-license applicants who try to expunge mental hospitalization records.
The governor’s record of never having been overridden on a veto still stands.
That loophole? The patient simply doesn’t disclose the reason for seeking the expungement.
“This is, after all, neither a narrow nor an insignificant bill”, said Assemblyman Gordon Johnson (D-Teaneck). “It allows county police and courts to be involved”. “If you can’t vote for this, you need to search your souls about why you’re sitting in this chamber”.
Mike DuHaime, a senior adviser for Christie’s campaign, said that while Christie’s efforts may not be as visible as others, the campaign is working methodically behind the scenes to lay the groundwork in later voting states.
“What’s wrong with making this bill stronger?” Democrats insisted that issue could be addressed later.
“I’m not going to play politics because politics is not going to protect them”, said Assemblywoman Betty Lou DeCroce (R-26), who attempted to offer Kean’s bill on the floor.
Democrats control 47 seats in the Assembly. “I will put this bill back up again and again – as often as possible before the end of the legislative session”.
Despite polling so low that he did not qualify for the fourth main-stage Republican debate – Christie failed to register 2.5% support among likely Republican voters nationally in an average of select polls – the governor has seen some bright spots in New Hampshire, where he’s reportedly made more campaign stops than any candidate aside from Sen.
“Those who are here to serve someone’s political ambitions will pay the price with the voters”.
