“I do not believe West Virginia needs a right-to-work law, a law that would lead to little if any economy growth and may lower the wages of West Virginia workers”, the governor said.

“With the House of Delegates and Senate overriding Gov. Tomblin’s veto of the Right to Work Bill, West Virginia is now America’s 26th Right to Work state”, National Right to Work Committee President Mark Mix said in a statement to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
“That is why we got it out early so we would have time to try and override the veto”, she said. He talked about West Virginia’s beleaguered economy and our status at the bottom of many socioeconomic rankings.
As coal and natural gas tax revenues fizzle, West Virginia faces a $384 million budget gap this year and a $466 million gap next year. “Now, more than half of the states have enacted Right to Work laws to protect workers’ fundamental right to freedom of association”.
Both the House and Senate are expected to override both vetoes as soon as Friday.
In his veto message, Tomblin wrote that the repeal was an “about-face from our 81-year history of paying laborers, workers, and mechanics fairly for constructing public improvements”. Republican lawmakers claimed that loosening labor laws was necessary to attract businesses to the state.
“I am not surprised at Governor Tomblin’s decision to veto these bills, but I am disappointed”. I believe both of these bills – the West Virginia Workplace Freedom Act and the repeal of the state’s prevailing wage law – accomplish this goal.
“Today’s vetoes are disappointing, but not entirely surprising”, Armstead said in a Thursday statement. “The Senate will not delay action to override these vetoes”. The law means unions would be required to represent non-union workers even though they would not pay union dues or fees. The laws have gained popularity in recent years among Republicans-dominated state legislatures that view them as a way to spark economic growth. Tomblin also opposes tapping state reserves. Union membership has been steadily declining. IN became a Right to Work state in 2012. “We applaud their swift response to the governor’s veto and we are excited for the opportunities that have been created for the Mountain State”.
