Lawmakers Question Officials After Controversial Texas Jail Death

Although the official autopsy report shows the July 13 death of Sandra Bland, 28, was a suicide by hanging, her family and supporters reject the finding.

Bland was arrested July 10 after an encounter with Texas trooper Brian Encinia escalated. Yet as Goldberger conceded, it is impossible to say how much THC was in Bland’s blood at the time of her death because post-mortem redistribution from fatty tissue may have boosted the concentration. Brandon Wood, executive director of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, said handling inmates with histories of mental illness was the most serious problem faced by county jails in Texas.

“Unfortunately, you’ve got people putting information out there that is trying to convince people that she was murdered and deceased before she came to the Waller County Jail”, Waller County Judge Trey Duhon told reporters during the news conference.

The “Fox & Friends” co-host said that Sandra Bland could have used her cigarette as a weapon during the traffic stop that lead to her arrest prior to her death. It will then ask for recommendations on how to address those problems.

Perhaps Ms. Bland was so depressed because of the lack of communication on the part of those people in her life who should have been there for her.

Returning to her vehicle after writing a warning ticket, an action that would have sent Bland on her way had he simply given it to her, Encinia picked a fight.

In the interview, which aired earlier today, Lynch said that she hopes that Bland’s death will jumpstart de-escalation training within law enforcement departments.

Officer Tensing can be heard questioning DuBose about his license, while DuBose insists that it’s not suspended, but he doesn’t have it with him.

“I’ve been black all my life, and I can tell you that there’s a concern about aggressive policing, particularly when it comes to African-Americans”, Coleman said. She was arrested the previous Friday after an alleged altercation with her ex-husband, which reportedly involved smashing his auto with a tire iron. According to her sisters, Jones had various health issues, including a brain aneurysm and heart murmur, though when her family visited her in jail on Saturday morning, she appeared to be in good health.

Citing the ongoing investigation into the incident, McCraw declined to answer many questions, including one from Rep. Nicole Collier, D-Fort Worth, on whether there was a reason to arrest Bland. Over 300,000 have signed a national petition calling on an independent Justice Department investigation of Sandra Bland’s death.

The 28-year-old Bland had about 30 small cuts on her wrist that were probably self-inflicted within the last few weeks, Diepraam said.

The amount of THC, one of the active components of marijuana, in Bland’s system was 18 micrograms per liter, according to the report released Monday. “I tried talking to her and calming her down”, he said.

And for that he is morally responsible for what happened to Sandra Bland in that jail cell.

“Our jails have sort of become the modern debtors’ prisons”, said Wu, who urged the use of more personal recognizance bonds, which don’t require payments.
