Choi declined to provide details about the incident. Their races are not known, though Reynolds described the officer who shot Castile as Asian.
The interim police chief in nearby St. Anthony, Jon Mangseth, said he was aware of the video but had not seen it. “This thing that has happened in Dallas was not because of something that transpired in Minnesota”. “I don’t think it would have”.
Kim Kardashian is urging her fans to take action after two African-American men were killed by police officers this week (ends08Jul16).
Sterling’s shooting was caught on cellphone video by an anti-violence group.
Demonstrators gather outside the governor’s residence Friday, July 8, 2016, in St. Paul, Minn., where protests continue over the shooting death by police of Philando Castile after a traffic stop Wednesday, July 6, in Falcon Heights.
“While we pray for the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, we will also pray for an end to this plague of injustice in our communities”.
Mangseth said the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has taken over the investigation. Castile and his fiancée, Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, were pulled over for an alleged busted taillight. The 32-year-old school cafeteria supervisor was shot during a traffic stop while reaching for his wallet, according to his girlfriend, who live-streamed video of the shooting’s immediate aftermath on Facebook.
Officials said 21 officers were hurt, one suffered a broken vertebrae and another a dislocated shoulder. “I told him to get his hands up”. On the video she can be heard saying, “you shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his licence and registration, sir”.
Jeronimo Yanez and Joseph Kauser were identified as the two St. Anthony police officers involved in the shooting; Yanez is the officer who shot Castile.
Authorities say that during the traffic stop, Yanez approached Castile’s vehicle from the driver’s side and another officer approached from the passenger side.
The bureau did not give the officers’ races.
A source has confirmed that Castile had a valid permit to carry a gun when he was shot and killed.
The St. Paul Police Department tweeted that arrests have been made during the protest but didn’t indicate how many.
Further, in light of the fatal shootings of five Dallas police officers later the same day, amid heightened tensions across the entire nation, the governor’s comments could also be viewed as reckless.
Yanez, who is Latino, is on leave while the state authorities are investigating the shooting. She recalled cautioning him to always comply with police, but she said she never thought she would lose him.
“This has to cease”.
The president of the Minneapolis NAACP, Nekima Levy-Pounds, told the crowd she has no faith in the system in the wake of this and other police shootings of black men, including last year’s killing of Jamar Clark in Minneapolis.
