Leaders never tee off Saturday at PGA Championship

NOT A BAD DAY: Defending champion Jason Day was among the 10 who were completely washed out Saturday and are slated to play 36 holes today. The last time that happened was 2011.

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) – Thunderstorms shut down the PGA Championship on Saturday before 10 players could even hit a shot, setting up what could be a long, wet and wild conclusion to the final major of the year – whenever it ends. The course was pounded with rain and players eventually were sent home.

“Hopefully I can get to 10- or 11 [-under par] and have a shot [today]”, said Kisner, 32, a native of SC who earned his first PGA Tour win in November at the RSM Classic.

“I’m guessing we’re going to be here ’till at least Monday, hopefully not Tuesday”.

Thirty-seven had completed their third rounds before the klaxon sounded to suspend play.

The leaders made the turn in the final round of the PGA Championship and Jimmy Walker was still in front.

And Open champion Stenson was just a shot further back in his bid to win two major titles in the space of three weeks after carding a second consecutive 67.

Haigh said that the possibility of a two-tee start was not even “significantly discussed”, because the forecast for Saturday was not dissimilar to the past two days, when they dodged summer storms.

Co-leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb had been scheduled to tee off at 2:55 p.m.

The last time the US PGA was held at Baltusrol in 2005, Phil Mickelson prevailed in a Monday finish brought about by poor weather. He could be in contention heading into the final round with wind and rain in the forecast over the weekend.

Day, who is one shot behind, is looking to join Tiger Woods as the only repeat champion since stroke play began in 1958.

Saturday at the PGA Championship was a dreary one. Mickelson and Henrik Stenson shots 63s this month in the British Open.

On Saturday, after a bogey again on No. 1, he had birdies on Nos. It’s going to be a fascinating day of golf.

Numerous marquee players didn’t get to finish their rounds, but Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth all took the course. Hope is that Round 4 action can begin at 8:40 a.m. with the current top of the leaderboard attempting to go off at 3:25 p.m. Day won past year at Whistling Straits.

The plan is for both the third and fourth rounds to be played Sunday, with the same pairings for both.

The record for largest comebacks after the opening round at the PGA is eight shots by three players, most recently Keegan Bradley in 2011 at Atlanta Athletic Club.

But 37 of 86 golfers who made the cut did complete the third round before storms stopped play for the day, with resumption set for 7 a.m. (12:00 SA time) Sunday over the water-logged par-70 layout.
