LEADING OFF: King Felix back for Mariners, Pomeranz debuts
He surrendered five runs and left the game with nobody out and two runners on base. The #1 factor due for regression is his home run to fly ball percentage.

Cain gave up three homers in just 2 1/3 innings – two of them to Hanley Ramirez – as the Boston Red Sox completed a two-game interleague sweep over San Francisco, 11-7 on Wednesday night. The Giants plan to activate Cain before the game Wednesday. His last was the most important, stepping on the Giants’ throat after they clawed back to score seven unanswered runs. “I was going along pretty good through the first three (innings)”.
That’s not surprising, as the Red Sox owns the most potent offense in baseball.
But the Giants’ second-half issues with runners in scoring position could only be remedied briefly. He also reached base after being hit by a pitch in the fourth. After the Giants scored twice more in the sixth inning to make it a one-run game, the same issues progressed.
Matt Barnes (3-3) was awarded the victory as the first effective Red Sox pitcher, coming on with a one-run lead and the bases loaded in the sixth and pitching out of it, thanks to Ramirez’s glove.
Pomeranz was pulled in the fourth inning, and by that time Hanley Ramirez was just warming up.
Tyler Naquin, OF, Indians: In Cleveland’s 11-4 beatdown of Kansas City, Naquin (3 for 4, two home runs) became the first Indians rookie to have six RBIs in a game since Turner Ward on September 15, 1990 – also against the Royals.
Boston Red Sox’s Hanley Ramirez tosses his bat while rounding first after his two run, home run off San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain during second inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park, Wednesday, July 20, 2016, in Boston.
Matt Cain only lasted into the third inning and the Giants almost erased an 8-0 deficit before Ramirez’s third two-run blast of the night virtually ensured that Bruce Bochy’s team would leave Fenway Park still looking for their first victory here in 101 years. He needed 46 to get the next four outs. The homer was a three-run blast, Big Papi’s twenty-third in his final season, and one that continues to thumb its nose at Father Time. Robbie Ross, Jr. caught it with his hat in the Red Sox bullpen. That staked Boston to a 5-0 lead, one that continued to grow without Cain on the mound. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 3-plus innings of work.
Ramirez’s first career three-homer game gave him 11 for the season.
Brock Holt also homered for the Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in eight games despite a strong start by former teammate Jake Peavy. “You look flat when you don’t hit or drive in a run and they start pressing a little bit and we’ve got to get on track here soon”. That was the finishing touch on Suarez’s five-run, three-inning outing. Derek Law finally steadied the bullpen. He allowed only a hit one 1 2/3 innings.
