Pitching with a bone spur in his right elbow that he has called “pretty insignificant”, Syndergaard stepped off the rubber with two outs in the fifth and a 2-2 count on Jayson Werth.

With his velocity dipping, Syndergaard exited in the fifth with arm fatigue that was not elbow-related, the Mets said.

And now to put fear in the hearts of every Mets fan: Noah Syndergaard walks off the field Friday night with a trainer.

Strasburg became the first National League pitcher to start a season 12-0 since 1913 with the win tonight. The 23-year-old ace left with the Mets trailing, 3-0, and threw 79 pitches over 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five. I think he deserves it. The slugger got hurt chasing Daniel Murphy’s RBI double to deep center field in the third and was replaced by Juan Lagares in the fourth. There is no immediate report on the severity of either player’s ailment but each could miss Tuesday’s All Star Game where they were selected to play in San Diego.

Meanwhile, Cespedes, who left the game after the third inning, was optimistic he could avoid a trip to the disabled list.

“Coming in here, we knew it was a big series”, Baker said. To add insult to injury, the Mets (47-39) lost to the Nationals (52-36) 3-1 to fall back to four games out of the National League East lead.

Aside from Cabrera’s homer, the Mets managed just one other hit and struck out nine times over Strasburg’s seven innings.

Down 3-1, the Mets generated a unsafe scoring threat in the bottom of the eighth, as Wilmer Flores stroked a leadoff ground-rule double and advanced to third on Jose Reyes’ infield single to second, putting runners on the corners with no outs.

Jonathan Papelbon took the ball in the ninth with a two-run lead and retired the Mets in order to end it. Ballgame.

He extended all his streaks in improving to (W, 12-0) on the year with an unbeaten streak that stretched back over 20 starts in which he was (15-0).

NY has homered in 11 straight games, the club’s longest streak since they hit home runs in 15 straight games in May 2006.

Murphy, booed again by the Citi Field crowd of 35,030, has hit safely in all 11 games against the Mets since they let him leave as a free agent in the offseason. The offense helped him out by scoring three early runs against Noah Syndergaard, which ended up being all the Nats would need as they defeated the New York Mets, 3-1.
