Leafs G Sparks, F Spaling out long-term
Burns, who also had two assists on the game, took a pass from center Joe Thornton and fired home his 11th goal at 2:13 of overtime. “We obviously had a little talk and competed way harder in the second”.

Defenseman Brent Burns scored in overtime and the San Jose Sharks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Thursday.
It was not immediately clear who the Leafs’ emergency goaltender would be.
The majority of his timely saves came in the late stages of the third period and overtime on crafty shots through screens by Patrick Marleau and Melker Karlsson as well as a tricky deflection from Joe Pavelski.
David Backes scored the other goal for the Blues while Roman Josi scored on a power-play for the Predators.
Johnny Oduya, on a short-handed tally in the first period, got the Stars’ lone goal. We love playing at home, but we definitely expect to be better. “We knew they weren’t going to be happy with their first period, and we didn’t handle it well”.
Two quick goals in the second period lifted Los Angeles over Montreal at the Bell Centre.
The Maple Leafs were thoroughly outplayed in the first period where Sparks faced 15 shots and allowed two power play goals before leaving the game.
San Jose Sharks goalie Martin Jones (31) makes a save against… Jonathan Bernier, who has struggled with the Leafs this season (0-8-2 with 3.42 GAA before this game), replaced Sparks in net.
Defenceman Brent Burns scored the victor by banking the puck off of Peter Holland to cap a see-saw affair in which both teams were unable to hang on to a two-goal lead. He gave up the tying goal to Nieto with 8:11 left in the third, but team defence in front of Bernier was more responsible than he was.
Just over a minute after Micheal Grabner made it 4-2 at 1:59, Marc-Edouard Vlasic atoned for an early giveaway that resulted in the Maple Leafs first goal, to cut the lead to one with his point shot through traffic.
Soon after, Bernier stopped a penalty shot by San Jose center Chris Tierney.
Toronto hasn’t offered an update on Sparks yet, but he got up from the second goal and appeared to know right away that something was very wrong. “We wanted to get this one for him for sure”, Holland said. Marleau beat Sparks on the glove side for his 13th goal of the season.
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – A pair of goals 40 seconds apart midway through the third period broke open a one-goal game and lifted Minnesota over the New York Rangers at Xcel Energy Center.
No victor emerged after 60-minutes of play and the Sharks and Leafs went into overtime. “I had a good practice this morning, I just want to keep building and I thought it was a step in the right direction tonight”.
Now Bernier has the chance to play a lot of games, including at least two of the next three against the Kings, his former team, and then at the Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes. Toronto C Nick Spaling left the game with an upper-body injury on the game’s first shift.
