Lebanon ministry calls for ban of Wonder Woman film
The call stirred controversy and debate days before the highly anticipated D.C. Comics American superhero film was set to premiere.

Obviously, Gadot as Wonder Woman is what’s front and center in the movie, but I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t gush about Chris Pine for a moment.
The AP could not reach officials at Lebanon’s Economy Ministry or Warner Bros. for comment.
That’s different from the origin story depicted in the Wonder Woman film, in which Wonder Woman is the biological child of Hippolyta (played in the movie by Connie Nielsen, Boss) and the god Zeus.
Gadot also admitted she didn’t know exactly what film she was auditioning for when she tried out for the “Wonder Woman” role but believes it is the ideal one for her. Though Israel and Lebanon have clashed several times over the years, Gadot was serving during the especially devastating 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War.
Although the country has fewer restrictions on its citizens than some of the other countries in the region, Lebanon routinely censors entertainment “relating to Israel, religion and homosexuality”.
“Wonder Woman is the first major studio superhero film directed by a woman, and it shows in a number of subtle, yet important ways”, wrote reviewer Andrew Barker. The two movies were approved in Egypt.
Director Patty Jenkins is drawing parallels between her vision of Wonder Woman and her fellow DC Comics icon Superman.
This news follows after the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in Lebanon urged the government to ban the screening of the film across the country. That would make it not only the best-reviewed film in the DCEU, easily besting current champ Man of Steel’s rotten 55 percent, but also the best-reviewed superhero movie of all time. “I want my film to be celebrated”, she said. She served two years in the Israel Defense Force as required by the country’s conscription requirements and has posted in the past in support of IDF during the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict.
“Wonder Woman” opens in theaters on June 2.
Deadline reports this summer’s most highly anticipated blockbuster, Wonder Woman, is now eyeing a $175 million-plus opening weekend at the global box office. She appeared in sequels of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, none of which were banned in Lebanon.

That was when the Lebanese campaign against Gadot’s movies began, as the same campaigners sought to bar Batman Vs Superman.
