Now LeBron James has a big new announcement: through the LeBron James Family Foundation, he plans to send hundreds of qualifying students from his hometown of Akron, Ohio, to college on four-year academic scholarships. “Our volunteers are inspired by LeBron’s extraordinary personal commitment to Akron’s kids, and the important work of LJFF”.

According to Paula Schleis of the Akron Beacon Journal, in each of the last four years, the LeBron James Foundation has selected about 300 third-graders to enter James’ Wheels for Education program.

“I did not have this opportunity or the kids growing up in my neighborhood to follow a program where we would have a scholarships waiting for us”, James said in a press conference following the announcement.

A committee will finalize the scholarship eligibility requirements for those students, but University of Akron President Scott L. Scarborough said AIPN attendance and grade point average will be among the committee’s considerations.

“He has a chance to change their futures”, Campbell said. The first class eligible for the scholarships will graduate in 2021.

The university also announced they will be renaming its College of Education after James’ foundation. “This is a program that focuses on the local area”. I think LeBron’s philosophy is that things are earned not given and that aligns well with our emphasis on experience and learning and career service and education. The program is supported by the University of Akron and JPMorgan Chase.
