Led air strikes on Syrian army threaten ceasefire: Russian Federation

The advance regained territory lost to the terrorists Saturday when Syrian troops were hit with airstrikes by the US -led coalition.

The Russian Defense Ministry said 62 Syrians were killed, and the Syrian government said the coalition airstrike allowed the Islamic State to advance around Deir el-Zour province where the attack took place.

The Saturday night raid, which the United States claims was unintentional, lasted for 40 minutes and killed at least 90 regime troops near Deir el-Zour on Saturday, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The US-led coalition confirmed in a statement on Saturday that it had mistakenly bombed a Syrian army airbase, killing dozens of Syrian government troops.

Russia’s defence ministry said more than 60 Syrian soldiers were killed and around 100 wounded in four strikes by two F-16s and two A-10s.

Russia’s foreign ministry said that Moscow was “deeply concerned” over the airstrike, warning that the incident might jeopardize the implementation of the U.S. -Russia cease-fire plan.

The Pentagon said the USA strike has unintentionally targeted the Syrian government forces.

Under the ceasefire agreement, the U.S. and Russian Federation would work together to target the Fatah al-Sham Front, as well as the Islamic State group, while Assad’s forces refrain from striking opposition-held areas.

Meanwhile, truckloads of humanitarian aid destined for the beleaguered city of Aleppo remained stuck on the Turkish border on Sunday, with the United Nations saying it was waiting for guarantees from both Syrian rebels and government forces for safe passage. It said the airstrikes were “on objective and planned in advance”, and killed dozens of Syrian soldiers.

The first airstrikes on Aleppo since the ceasefire began on Monday evening were reported on Sunday.

Deir al-Zour, where the airstrike took place, is far from the populated western region, where the separate civil war that is the subject of the cease-fire is focused.
