British warplanes carried out airstrikes in Syria early Thursday, taking off from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

Two Tornados and a tanker could be sent to Turkey’s Incirlik air base next week if the German Parliament approves the mission Friday as expected.

The Obama administration also faces increasing pressure to act following the November 13 Paris attacks that have raised fears over security in Western nations and prompted France, Britain and Germany to boost their role in the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State.

“But what I’ve been very clear about is that we are going to systematically squeeze and ultimately destroy ISIL, and that requires us having a military component to that”, he told CBS, using an acronym for Islamic State.

“So the political process and the action against Daesh (IS) to keep us safe at home go hand in hand”.

The update reinforced the belief that one of the problems in conducting airstrikes against Isis in Syria is the lack of immediate targets.

“Without boots on the ground it will be hard to make any change”.

Asked if the air strikes would continue for as long as four years, Mr Hammond said: “I hope it won’t be four years, but I caution that it isn’t going to be months”.

Russia is also conducting its own air strikes on Syria in alliance with Syrian forces and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies there should now be a single coalition to improve the “effectiveness” of the air campaign.

“Britain adds more strength to the fight against ISIL and I welcome that”, he said. An impromptu Economist poll published Thursday shows that of those surveyed, 47 percent are against the air strikes, 42percent are in favor and 11 percent are undecided.

Former prime minister Tony Blair welcomed the decision by MPs to authorise United Kingdom action against IS in Syria, in the Kissinger Lecture delivered at the Library of Congress in Washington on Thursday.

“It is in Syria where it pumps and sells the oil that does so much to help finance its evil acts”, Mr Cameron told Parliament on Wednesday ahead of the vote.

Mr Robertson said there was “absolutely no evidence” they would deploy as a unified army.

During the mission across Iraq, a terrorist sniper team opened fire on Iraq forces from a compound but was silenced by a direct hit from a Paveway IV guided bomb, the MoD said.

RAF Tornados hit an oilfield in eastern Syria hours after the Commons voted on Wednesday to authorise airstrikes in Syria.
