“We set some really big goals for Rio a couple of years ago and I never thought I would hit them so on the nose”, she said.

Phelps, fresh off a gold medal performance in the 200 meter medley Thursday, competes in the 100 meter butterfly, while Ledecky will end the night in the 800 meter freestyle.

Britain’s Jazz Carlin won her second silver medal in 8:16.17, and Boglarka Kapas of Hungary took the bronze.

“I had no doubt in my mind as soon as I touched and saw that we were second and close”, said Maya DiRado, who swam the third leg of the relay.

Women’s 200M Backstroke FinalMaya DiRado prevented Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu from winning her fourth individual gold medal of the 2016 Games by taking home her first individual gold medal of the week. The outcome of the race was never in doubt, and the Brazilian crowd loudly urged Ledecky on in pursuit of a new standard of greatness in the longest female Olympic swimming event.

Ledecky has now broken her own world record six times in the 800-meter freestyle.

United States’ Simone Biles bites her gold medal for the artistic gymnastics women’s individual all-around final at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Aug. 11, 2016. If Ledecky wins the gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle Friday night, she would become the second woman all-time to win gold in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter races. Lochte will be right next to him again, ranking second in 1:56.28.

“She said I’m not going to sleep until I give you a hug”, Manuel said.
