Ledecky caps historic run with world record in 800 freestyle

Katie Ledecky continued her dominance in the women’s 800-meter freestyle in Rio on Friday, earning her second consecutive gold in the event with a world-record time of eight minutes, 4.79 seconds.

Freestyle queen Katie Ledecky won her third gold medal of the Rio Olympics by anchoring the USA women to victory in the 4×200 metres freestyle relay on Wednesday while struggling Missy Franklin opened her account without being in the water for the final.

ESPN said Ledecky “beat her own world-record time by almost two seconds to become the second woman in history to win the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle races at the same Olympics”.

Katie Ledecky has delivered another dominating performance at the Rio Games, handily breaking the world record in the 800 freestyle.

It’s fitting that Ledecky closed out these games with the 800: Back in 2012, it was her shocking win in this event (at age 15, she beat then-world record holder Rebecca Adlington) that announced Ledecky’s presence as a swimmer with superstar potential. After winning four gold medals at these games and looking unbeatable, Phelps finally ran out of steam in what was the final individual race of his career unless he decides to come out of retirement again.

The relay clinched the United States’ 1,000th Summer Olympics gold medal on Saturday night here at the Aquatic Stadium.

The 25-year-old wins her second medal of Rio 2016, having also claimed silver in the 400m freestyle.

“I’m just ecstatic. I don’t think it has set in yet”. The win gave her four gold medals – three individual – to go along with the silver she won as part of the 4×100 freestyle relay in Brazil.

Astonishingly, all three touched out in 51.14 seconds, behind Schooling’s Olympic record 50.39 in the second dead-heat in a final in two days.

PUIG’S PUSH: Tennis player Monica Puig is one victory away from Puerto Rico’s first gold medal in Olympic history. “I don’t know what to believe, like, whether I actually did it or I’m still preparing for my race”. Also advancing were Chad le Clos of South Africa, James Guy of Britain and Santo Condorelli of Canada.

It has completed a remarkable Olympics for Carlin who has overcome the disappointment of missing out on London 2012 to become Team GB’s first double medallist of Rio 2016. “It’s just insane”, Schooling said.

“I hope so”, she said. French star sprinter Florent Manaudou, the heavy favorite, finished second by one-hundredth of a second.

Judo is set to come to a close on Friday as the heavyweights take to the mat in the Carioca arena.

“But I screwed up, ‘” he said. Only four other female swimmers have ever won four golds in a single games, most recently America’s Missy Franklin in London.
