The teenager would grow up to become the mother of Katie Ledecky, who on Friday night became the first Olympian since Meyer to win the 200, 400 and 800. Boglárka Kapás of Hungary came in third at 8 minutes, 16.37 seconds. “It brings back so many wonderful memories of when I was swimming, things that this old brain has forgotten”.

The Colorado Stars club swimmer and graduate of Aurora’s Regis Jesuit High School won four gold medals in her Olympic debut in 2012, but had to wait until five days into the Rio Games to claim her first. But DiRado came on strong on the final lap and beat Hosszu at the touch to win in 2 minutes, 5.99 seconds.

“I think my emotions are so high right now that I just want to soak that in and figure out the rest later”.

The women’s 800-meter freestyle is set for 9:20 p.m.in Rio.

Another victory would be Phelps’ 22nd career gold.

Only 37 athletes – 18 of them American – have won four gold medals at the same Games since the dawn of the modern Olympics in 1896. She holds the 800-meter world record time of 8:06.68.

She said that Meyer had sent her a video message of support via her mother before the race.

USA’s Anthony Ervin just set a record of his own, becoming the oldest male swimmer to win an individual medal in Olympic history. Still, she added two more medals to her trophy case, also getting a silver in the 4×100 relay along with Ledecky.

“I feel great about getting another medal”, said Adrian, who barely advanced out of the preliminaries.

A stunner at the Rio Olympics: Michael Phelps has been beaten. But he’ll have to do with some help from his teammates, swimming in the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay on the final night of swimming on Saturday.
