Ledecky hands medals to Harper, throws out first pitch

The Nationals have lost the first two games of the Beltway rivalry series.

“I’m definitely more comfortable doing something big in front of a lot of people than I was four years ago [when she first threw out a first pitch at Nationals Park]”, said a smiling Ledecky.

As the Nationals star outfielder admired the medals of the Olympic champion and held her hat, Ledecky threw the ceremonial first pitch to reliever Shawn Kelley before Washington hosted the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old Bethesda native returned from the games in Rio with four golds and a silver medal. Before making her delivery, Ledecky unloaded all her hardware and handed it to Harper, who hung the medals around his forearms.

“I practiced a little bit yesterday”, said Ledecky, an admitted fan of both Harper and the first-place Nats, prior to taking the mound.

Ledecky, of course, took home the gold medal this month in the Women’s 200m freestyle, Women’s 800m freestyle, Women’s 400m freestyle and the Women’s 4x200m freestyle relay in the recently-completed 2016 Brazil Olympics. “They are pretty heavy”.

Fresh off her Olympic heroics, Ledecky said she’s taking time to enjoy herself and her hometown area before heading to Stanford, where she’ll begin school next month.
