Katie Ledecky leads the field by a wide margin in the women’s 800m freestyle final on Day 7 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
In tonight’s race, and in many performances since the London Olympics, Ledecky has shown she’s intent on fulfilling that potential.
She also followed fellow swimmers Amy Van Dyken and Missy Franklin as the only American women to win as many as four golds in a single Olympics. She won by almost 12 seconds.
Gatlin took Saturday’s fastest time in the heats. Meyer took the 200, 400 and 800 meter free at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968. Finally, the issue was resolved and Husain will be in the fifth of 12 heats when she competes Friday. Hilary Caldwell of Canada had the second quickest time of 2:07.40.
Chinese officials say a female Chinese swimmer has tested positive for a banned substance at the Rio Olympics – the first competitor in the sport to fail a test at the games. She earned a gold medal as part of the 4×200 freestyle relay after swimming in the preliminaries but the games have been disappointing for her.
The Brazilian women, meanwhile, have an entire nation of 209 million people rooting for them when they meet Australia on Friday.
Five sprinters at Rio have joined the small list of women to crack the 10.8-second mark: Elaine Thompson of Jamaica, Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast and American teammates English Gardner, Tianna Bartoletta and Tori Bowie.
On the men’s side, preliminaries start in the 400 meter and 800 meter races. In the longer of the two, the man to beat is David Rudisha, though he did struggle in the Kenyan trials.
More than 85,000 security forces have been deployed in Rio for the Olympics, which is double the number of London in 2012.
Fiji has its first-ever Olympic medal – and it’s gold to boot.
And two other Americans won gold, too.
PUIG’S PUSH: Tennis player Monica Puig is one victory away from Puerto Rico’s first gold medal in Olympic history.
Phelps’ mother, Debbie, sounded bullish on her son competing in what would be his sixth Olympics where he’d be 35 years old. Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, left, and Ecuador’s Narcisa Landazuri compete in a women’s 100-meter heat during the athletics competitions of the 2016 Summer Olympics at the Olympic stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Fr.
The dominating USA teams are back on the court.
At 12 p.m., Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley take on countrywomen Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas. At age 19, she’s both the youngest member of the USA swim team and its most sure-thing victor. Britain and Germany are the favorites in the men’s eight but could be challenged by the US crew.
United States’ Megan Rapinoe, kicks the ball past Sweden’s Lisa Dahlkvist during a quarter-final match of the women’s Olympic football tournament between the United States and Sweden in Brasilia Friday Aug. 12, 2016. In other action, China’s men face Australia.
The U.S. men, who play Serbia on Friday, are still the team to beat.
It’s the earliest the United States has been eliminated from the Olympics since women’s soccer became a sport in 1996. Sweden, ranked sixth, struggled in the group stage with a 5-1 loss to host Brazil and finished 1-1-1. 1-0 in the round of 16. The Australian is one shot ahead of Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, a former NCAA champion who closed with three straight birdies.
