Ledecky wins Olympic 800m freestyle gold in new world record
Thursday night, Ledecky also became the third American woman to win four gold medals at a single Olympics; Ledecky now stands with Missy Franklin (2012; four golds and a bronze) and Amy Van Dyken (1996, four golds). She won her first gold medal at age 15 with a time 10 seconds slower than August 12.

Carlin knows silver was the best she could ever get against Ledecky, who also beat her in the 400m and whose 800m time of eight minutes 4.79 seconds nearly knocked two seconds off her own world record.
The scoreboard replays the United States’ Katie Ledecky celebrating after she won gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle at the Summer Olympics, during the seventh inning of a baseball game between the Washington Nationals and.
Jazz Carlin finally touched in 8:16.17 to claim the silver, just ahead of Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas grabbing the bronze in 8:16.37.
Friday’s effort carved almost 2 seconds off the 800m mark to 8 minutes 4.79 seconds and was no less than what she expected.
Michael Phelps, swimming in the final individual event of his career with retirement looming, finished the 100-meter butterfly in a three-way tie for silver behind Singapore’s Joseph Schooling. “It’s been a really long week and I knew it was going to be a tough one”.
The teenager would grow up to become the mother of Katie Ledecky, who on Friday night became the first Olympian since Meyer to win the 200, 400 and 800.
“There’s nothing I can do”, Phelps said after Friday’s race. Her qualifying time in the 200 backstroke was 1.5 seconds faster than DiRado. The Nationals replayed the final stages of the race on the video scoreboard during the seventh-inning stretch. It was also 12 seconds after Ledecky finished that the silver medalist finally touched the wall.
UVa athletes have won 25 overall Olympic medals across all sports, including 15 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Carlin told BBC One: “Two silver medals, it is an incredible feeling”.
Though Phelps’ record in the 100 butterfly suggests utter dominance, he had won his previous three gold medals by a combined 0.28 of a second.
Phelps, with four gold medals at these Games to give him 22 in his career, will compete in the 400-meter medley relay Saturday. “I like being in an environment where I can try to swim to the best of my potential and I don’t think that my age should limit me with that”. Ledecky got Phelps’ autograph that day – an autograph she says she still has.
And, well, the race ended about as soon as Katie Ledecky hit the pool.
Ledecky will rightly look to enjoy her success but things can change quickly in swimming.
And two other Americans won gold, too.
For DiRado, who is leaving the sport to take up a job in management consultancy, it was the flawless way to exit after a week in which she amassed two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

Ledecky, 19, was projected to be one of the breakout stars of the 2016 Games, and her swims this week have offered an array of pleasures for swimming connoisseurs. She’ll be 23 then-the prime for many female swimmers-and no one who orbits in her universe believes she’ll suffer a burnout.
