Wong will face world No 1 Malaysian Lee Chong Wei in his second Group A match on Sunday, 8.55am.
Chong Wei admitted that there was too much rest before his next match. It means that he will not top his group and ends his second Olympic campaign before the knock-out rounds. “I just have to focus from now on”. “It’s the Olympics and I want the gold so I have to accept all challenges”, said Chong Wei.
Chong Wei, however, refused to talk about the potential encounter, saying: “I know this is what most athletes would say but yes, I’m only looking at one match at a time”. He defeated Austrian David Obernosterer 21-5, 21-11.
In the women’s singles, Tee Jing Yi is not expected to go far while men’s doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, women’s pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei and mixed duo Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying must reach the quarterfinals at the very least to justify the money spent on them all these years.
The Malaysian was leading 17-14 in the first game when she injured her calf.
“It is good to have finished the group stage without any problems and I can now focus on the knockout stage”.
