Knox is now seventh in the FedEx Cup standings on the PGA Tour – Henrik Stenson is the next highest European at 21st – and therefore in contention to win the overall title and Dollars 10million bonus at the Tour Championship, which finishes just five days before plays gets under way at Hazeltine.
Despite his age – he has played in nine Ryder Cups and was widely viewed as a potential vice captain for 2016 -Westwood set out to claim a spot for himself on Team Europe, showing grit in the face of doubt.
“Thomas I think will be a great addition to the team”. “And the style and manner in which he won over the weekend I think really impressed the captain”.
McIlroy did sympathise with the likes of Russell Knox and Luke Donald, who missed out on selection, but he believes Pieters showed his credentials with his victory in Denmark.
“I had to make a judgement on the evidence as it stood at the time when I needed to name my wild cards”. I mean I’m not close with any of them.
“It’s not their job to reach out, hold my hand and drag me through”. It was 100 per cent my responsibility to do my part and maybe try to include myself a bit more. It’s not about having 12 best friends on the team.
“I’m excited. Obviously there’s a few weeks to go but I’m excited about the prospect of trying to win a fourth (Ryder Cup)”.
” When Darren called me it was obvious within one second that is wasn’t going to be good news”.
“It’s going to be hard for me to watch (the Ryder Cup) but I probably will and I’ll be rooting for the team of course. I wish them all the best and hope they win”, he told reporters.
But the 48-year-old insisted Westwood had not been selected because of the pair’s longstanding friendship, adding: ” I selected him because he brings something that no one else can bring to the Ryder Cup.
“Of course, I feel like I deserve to be there and should be playing but I’m not, so I have to respect the decision that’s been made”.

Westwood and Clarke played together eight times in the Ryder Cup, most memorably at The K Club in 2006 just weeks after the death of Clarke’s first wife Heather.
