Legendary Entertainment has confirmed it caught a potentially monster new film franchise – the Pokemon series. We’re going the gumshoe route!

Rumors of a possible Pokemon movie deal have circled for months, and the screenwriter Max Landis has been mentioned as a possible participant. Variety reports that Legendary Pictures has indeed won the rights to a live-action Pokémon movie, and will be producing a feature based on Detective Pikachu.
That’s all supposing film studio Legendary – which optioned the film adaptation rights – gets together the right talent and has the necessary support from Nintendo, of course, a company which has been notably circumspect about the big screen (remember how it said no to a Mario cameo in Wreck-It Ralph?).

The Dalian Wanda-owned studio announced plans to shoot a live-action “Detective Pikachu“, which will star the property’s popular little yellow character. Universal will be distributing the film outside of Japan, while Toho, longtime collaborator with the Pokemon Company, will distribute it in Japan. Basically, players interacted with a Sherlock Holmes-type Pikachu (who spoke to them) and helped him solve mysteries. However, movies take a long time to make, and Legendary better bank on the fact that people’s interest in Pokemon will remain once the film is ready for release. When not gaming, he’s probably running cross country or writing. More than likely, we’ll hear about this Pokemon movie coming together pretty quickly to capitalize on the popularity of Pokemon Go, perhaps starting production as early as 2017, so stay tuned to see how that goes.
