‘Legion’ announced as next ‘World of Warcraft’ expansion

If Warlords of Draenor was meant to be a callback to the mechanics of a pre-Cataclysm game, then it seems Legion is a direct homage to the story of World of Warcraft‘s first expansion, The Burning Crusade.

The game-maker introduced Legion with a cinematic trailer (which you can find here) that bridges the gap between its last expansion, Warlords of Draenor, before going into the details of what you can expect from the new expansion.

The expansion will also add a new character class called the Demon Hunter, and raise the maximum level cap to 110.

World of Warcraft Legion will take place on Broken Isles, a new continent coming to World of Warcraft where you will discover the Tomb of Sargeras. Be sure to also vote on which Legion expansion feature you’re most excited for via the included Design and Trend poll! Blizzard teased a beta by the end of the year and will be hosting a developer chat from Gamescom on Sunday. Dalaran will be back as the main player city hub, and Blizzard is finally letting players go to the Emerald Nightmare, a corrupted section of the game’s Emerald Dream. Speaking of classes, the new Demon Hunter class will make the jump from Diablo III to World of Warcraft, along with a revamped progression system. Gul’dan has gone off and found a longtime Warcraft badass Illidan Stormrage (as far as we can tell from a short CG video Blizzard showed).

We’re all thinking the same thing – a new expansion on its way? Now?

Want to know what some of the other features are? An all-new melee hero gifted with preternatural mobility and the ability to metamorphose into hellish new forms, the Demon Hunter exists as a damage dealer or tank. Is your character maxed out right now?

Now, six add-ons deep and more than 11 years out from its original launch, World of Warcraft’s dipping subscriber count could speak to more dramatic changes on the horizon. Gathering your followers in your new Order Hall, you’ll be able to adventure toward the Pillars of Creation and unlock its secrets to save Azeroth. Each character’s Artifact grows in power with its owner, and players can personalize their Artifact with perks, abilities, and appearance-altering characteristics that reflect the hero wielding it, transforming the Artifact into an instrument of order… or twisting it into an implement of devastation.
