“Regaining the Ashes is a superb achievement and is down to 18 months of hard work from the players and coaches and support from a lot of people since the last series in Australia“, he said.

Yet, coach Darren Lehmann remains confident that the 26-year-old will revel under the pressure of captaincy and will only improve as a player.

“That’s absolute garbage”, said Clarke, who was accompanied by his wife Kyly to Saturday morning’s post-match press conference at Trent Bridge in which he explained why he had decided to retire.

Clarke, 34, confirmed his decision to quit after his side slumped to defeat by an innings and 78 runs in a little over two days in the Fourth Test at Trent Bridge. They were both extremely respectful and thankful for what I’ve given Australian cricket.

“Sadly and as we do after every tour, win lose or draw, we will review performances and make assessments on things that have happened during the course of the tour, what happened leading into it, whatever aspect of it, the preparation and delivery and execution”, Sutherland said.

“We’re really strong on having five bowlers and we didn’t do that this game”.

Joe Root celebrates his eighth test century during the fourth Ashes test at Trent Bridge.

A feature of the series so far has been the inability of Australia’s batsmen to cope with the swinging and seaming ball on typical English pitches that aid lateral movement.

Clarke was welcoming when he started off as Australian skipper and led from the front which is a sign of a great leader.

“In recent months he has been rated as the best Test cricketer in the world. I’m more disappointed or sad with the way we played through this series and the way I played as captain”.

“It is not easy playing away but it s something that we clearly have to get better at”.

Chris Rogers has previously said he will do the same, but the opener has been the side’s best-performing batsman in the five-Test series.

The series defeat prompted an otherwise steadfast captain Michael Clarke to announce his retirement from worldwide cricket.

“I was lucky enough to have a quick drink with Cooky at Birmingham and I was really impressed with how relaxed he was”, Collingwood said.

But like his Australian team was humbled by England, Stoke went down 1-0 to Liverpool. “We’ve got to try to get a result there”.
