Adama Diomande put Hull ahead in first-half stoppage time, Riyad Mahrez leveled from the penalty spot just after the restart and Robert Snodgrass scored the victor in the 57th minute.
And it all got a bit too much for Vardy who was caught on camera striking himself in anger after wasting an opportunity.
Riyad Mahrez levelled from the spot, only for Robert Snodgrass to smash home the victor.
Hull, with Mike Phelan in the role of caretaker manager after Steve Bruce left in July, had been struggling in the run-up to Saturday’s match.
“A few players had to play out of position, but it was a case of just getting through”.
After trophy-laden spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola quickly put his stamp on City with debuts for new signings John Stones and Nolito and a surprise decision to replace goalkeeper Joe Hart with Willy Caballero. Sergio Aguero scored from the penalty spot early in the game.
Jack Rodwell slipped a pass through the heart of the City defence to Defoe, who slotted past Caballero.
McNair handed City all three points, though, when the ball struck his head and flew into his own net following a deflected low cross by Jesus Navas.
Meanwhile, Erik Lamela equalised to earn Tottenham – last season’s third-place team – a 1-1 draw at Everton.
Ross Barkley gave Everton its fifth-minute lead in Ronald Koeman’s first game in charge, but Erik Lamela headed a second-half equalizer for Spurs.
Ranieri confessed it had been a bad day at the office, admitting: “It was a hard match for us. It’s not important the result, it’s important how we play”, he added. I think this was the key of the match. “I’m very pleased about our first performance against a very good team”.
Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion both secured 1-0 away victories against Burnley and Crystal Palace respectively.

In the other games of the day, another newly promoted side Middlesborough were held to a 1-1 draw by Stoke City.
