Jamie Vardy netted his 11th goal in as many games as the England man broke Ruud van Nistlerooy’s Premier League record and helped Leicester to a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Asked by former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel what he had been shouting to the crowd as he celebrated, Vardy smiled and said: “I don’t think I can repeat it, to be honest with you!” It came from a corner to us, so we have to blame ourselves, we gave the goal away and that should not be possible.

“Yeah it’s unbelievable, I think I got a bit carried away with myself”.

‘Then we can not train Thursday, Friday, then the manager wants to deliver in another shape, I am proud of that match. “It was just another game we tried to get three points from”.

Bastian Schweinsteiger equalized for United, ensuring Leicester slipped from thier surprising position at the league summit, but that was just a footnote on a memorable day for Vardy. Playing for Sheffield United, Dunne scored 12 goals in succession. Man City won 3-1 against Southampton, while Leicester City and Manchester United played to a draw at 1-1. Can Leicester secure an European spot for next season and maybe even fight for the Premier League title?

– Vardy’s 14 goals make him the highest scoring Leicester City player in a single Premier League season, one above Tony Cottee who scored 13 in 1999/2000.

Vardy’s goals have powered the Foxes, under Claudio Ranieri, to the top of the Premier League – although they were knocked off before they kicked off against United thanks to Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Southampton.

Louis van Gaal’s side looked the more likely to grab all three points in the closing stages after Leonardo Ulloa fluffed his chance to put the finishing touch on another swift move from the hosts, with Juan Mata and Memphis Depay only offered brief glimpses of goal. “We knew (Vardy) was capable of making a goal like that, so it is a pity that we conceded that goal”. When you want to be the champions at the end of the season – and we want that, the players want that, the manager wants that and the fans wants that – then you have to win this kind of game and we didn’t do that so I am disappointed. I also wanted to change a striker because they were not running in behind.

He wasn’t the only one, with another record breaking forward Alan Shearer writing: “Congratulations @vardy7 what a magnificent achievement!!!”

It was a moment everyone in attendance had come to see and, such was the importance of the strike and the moment, the intensity of the game dipped in the aftermath, allowing United to get a foothold on the cusp of half time. For us, it’s important, 11 to go.
