Leicester’s achievement not as great as Clough’s Forest – Ranieri

The 64-year-old’s remarkable success with Leicester City has significantly boosted his profile and led to Carlo Tavecchio, the president of the Italian football federation, suggesting he could one day lead Italy to World Cup glory, and even suggested Ranieri, who was born in Rome, could succeed Antonio Conte after he leaves the national team following their participation at Euro 2016 and joins Chelsea.

Ranieri went into the job after having been sacked by Greece, and was clearly not fancied by other English sides. They now face a challenge to hold onto players such as Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante, but with a Champions League campaign on the horizon, Ranieri is confident that they will stay put. I ask only one thing: “that you give all you can for each other”.

“I hope Ranieri can win a World Cup with Italy, that would be the best”, said Tavecchio.

“I know a lot of (European) clubs will be thinking, “it’s okay, it’s only Leicester we’ve got”. They are 10 points clear of Tottenham and Arsenal and travel to Chelsea for Sunday’s finalé plotting, already, for their Champions League bow.

Clough’s side won promotion in 1977 before and won the First Division title a year later before adding back to back European Cups in 1979 and 1980. I want players with the same kind of attitude as my guys.

And there are now talks over making a film about Leicester’s title win.

Italian-American star Robert De Niro has been touted to play Ranieri, who said: “It doesn’t matter who plays me”.

That all contributed to Leicester lifting the Premier League trophy last Saturday, after Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli had started the celebrations at the King Power Stadium.

“That said, Nottingham Forest’s achievement was greater than ours, as they won the title and two European Cups while coming from the lower series”.
