Leicester’s Jamie Vardy breaks record against Manchester United with goal

Defender Ramiro Funes Mori netted Everton’s first set-piece goal of the season before Romelu Lukaku’s 12th of the campaign, and his eighth in as many Premier League games, gave Everton a 2-0 half-time lead.

Claudio Ranieri has given Vardy huge credit but he has always stressed all of his Leicester side deserve praise for their stunning form and it was another team display against United.

Danny Drinkwater gave away a corner and Daley Blind whipped in the cross which Schweinsteiger nodded in.

“I am different, but I think Van Gaal is doing a very good job”.

Most seasons, an unbelievable individual accomplishment like Vardy’s would be the crowning achievement, but these season’s Foxes are nothing if not overachievers.

Leicester: Jamie Vardy wheeled away in celebration, pointing repeatedly to his chest, shouting out loud and taking in the adulation of the crowd before getting mobbed by teammates.

Without him Leicester would be a much lesser team and not just if you took out his goals.

But the German, who scored United’s equaliser, has instead become one of Van Gaal’s main men, leaving his midfield rivals in a battle to play alongside him. That was Schweinsteiger’s first goal for Manchester United.

With Paddy McNair struggling for match fitness, United were left needlessly stretched by the tactical switch, and allowed Vardy and Co to exploit the abundance of space in the channels with relative ease.

The draw means they still have the best defensive record in the division, but Neville is torn between wanting more courageous attacking play from his former side and being satisfied with results so far this season. “When I got back into the dressing-room, the reaction from the lads was brilliant”, Vardy said.

The first-half’s earlier pattern re-emerged – United controlling possession before they were nearly punished by another lightning Leicester break in the 66th minute. They want to do their best until the end, and if the opponent is better than us on the day then well done to the opponent.

“I am very happy because before the match I said to my players we had two objectives today: 1) win the match and 2) try to help Vardy score and achieve the record”. Some good strikers, even some prolific goalscorers, have never had those periods in their careers when they look capable of burying every chance that comes their way, but that is the way it is these days for Vardy.

Newcastle now boast only two wins from 14 games, sitting second from bottom and turning in performances that make them prime relegation candidates. Then we can not train. “It’s different because it’s a different manager, it’s different champions who play, so everything is different”, he said on Sky Sports.

“When you don’t win, people will say it is boring, it’s not expansive enough, and that’s why I’m a little torn in this moment in time”.
