Lekki Building Collapse: 6 Rescued As Death Toll Rises To 4

Rescue operation is being conducted by responders such as; National Emergency management Authority, NEMA, LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service, Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Civil Defence Corp, Merchant Navy and members of the state police command.

The building, which was under construction, collapsed at Chisco Bus Stop in Lekki Phase One area of Lagos State in south western Nigeria.

As of 9am, four people have been recovered dead and six others rescued.

The horrific incident occurred after a heavy morning down pour at the Horizon 1, Lekki Gardens in Ikate, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Michael Akindele, General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA confirmed that the death toll had now risen to 10 and while those rescued so far is now 10 as at 4.00pm on Tuesday. Poor workmanship and materials, and a lack of official oversight are often blamed. But they are rarer in wealthier districts.

Numerous victims were workers and as squatters who slept in the building while the dead woman was said to be a food vendor at the building site.

Lekki is home to gated communities of US-style suburban homes and prices for a detached house can reach into the millions of dollars.
