Lenovo launches ThinkPad P50 and P70 workstation laptops with powerhouse specs

ThinkPad P50: Lenovo’s thinnest and lightest full-function mobile workstation yet, the ThinkPad P50 features a handsome 15.6-inch UHD 4K display and is certified to run users’ most requested ISV applications.

Lenovo has introduced its new ThinkPad P series laptops at the SIGGRAPH 2015 conference. “The Lenovo ThinkPad P70 gives these users all the performance they need and more to continue to raise the bar for graphics innovation and move their industry forward”. The P series notebooks will also include a new fingerprint reader that you activate with a touch instead of a swipe. The graphics are handled by NVDIA Quadro GPU, and are also equipped with two Intel Thunderbolt 3 ports, four USB 3.0, HDMI, mini-DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet, and weighs only 7.6lbs.

Lenovo says both P Series mobile workstations will be available in the fourth quarter of 2015.

“We are excited to bring Intel Xeon’s legacy of performance, manageability and reliability to mobile workstations”, said Navin Shenoy, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Mobility Client Platforms Group.

The P70 has a 17-inch screen and can also be configured with a DVD drive, and its price tag starts at $1,999.

The new mobile chips will be based on the company’s 14nm Skylake architecture, and it’s likely that they won’t have all the features we’ve come to expect from Xeon chips (don’t expect a 165 watt, 18-core processor for laptops). The Intel Xeon processors make these notebooks the ideal choice for engineers and even designers and given its MIL-SPEC test, it can handle the rough wear and tear on-the-go as well. A built-in X-Rite display calibrator ensures that all of those pixels display accurate colors, too. “It’s the best mobile workstation I’ve seen”. To keep the Xeon processor ticking over contentedly Lenovo has designed a new dual-fan FLEX Performance Cooling system.

The ThinkPad P70 goes on sale throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East from November, while the ThinkPad P50 will launch in the same markets in December.

The new reader takes up more surface area, but is far easier to use, said Flynn, because it doesn’t require you to hold your finger at a specific angle or swipe your finger at a specific speed. But at least it’s more portable than a desktop. It has support for three storage devices, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and lacks an optical disc drive.
