So now the question becomes, can “The Revenant” be successful with those nominations and actually win them?

Comedian Ricky Gervais was just one of the celebrities who took to Twitter to complain about the lack of black nominees, writing: “Why did the Oscars announce all the white nominees first?” You can stream the event live here or watch on ABC.
They should have given the Best Supporting Actor Oscar to little Leonardo DiCaprio back in 1994, when he owned the screen in every scene he was in during the quirky, heartbreaking What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
The nominees for best actor are DiCaprio (“The Revenant“), Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”).
George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road followed with 10 nominations, including best picture.
The 88th Academy Awards air February 28 on ABC and will be hosted by Chris Rock.
“This comes after getting criticism a year ago for nominating 20 white actors and now we have 40 white actors in a row for the Oscars – and it’s a big problem for Hollywood”.
However, Variety does predict newcomer Brie Larson will take home the Best Actress role for her role in Room, taking the award from the trophy-reaping Lawrence, who’s work in Joy has already solicited her a Golden Globe. Also nominated: Spotlight, The Martian, The Big Short, Mad Max: Fury Road, Brooklyn, Room and Bridge of Spies.
The talked-about film tells the story of a man who is left for dead by his expedition companions after being attacked by a bear, and has received 12 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Directing.

Some 6,000 members of the Academy vote to choose the nominees, most often within their branch of the industry. Also nominated were Tom Hardy (“The Revenant“) and Christian Bale (“The Big Short”). The bio-epic about the rap group N.W.A. did receive one nomination for best screenplay, and that was on behalf of two Caucasian writers. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is nominated for Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and that classic John Williams score.
