Chris Rock, who was the host this year, started the Oscars with a speech targeting the elephant in the room-this is the second year in a row in which every nominee was white. During his opening monologue, Rock makes scathing remarks about the racial sameness represented in Hollywood. It was “an example of something the industry is still trying to learn: that you can achieve both inclusion and entertainment by giving the right person just the right opportunity”.

Lady Gaga then performed “Till It Happens to You” backed by a choir made up entirely of sexual abuse survivors.

Also widely known as the Oscars, this televised red carpet affair marks the one night a year when the hottest stars, the greatest directors, the best producers, writers, editors, costume designers, music composers and cinematographers gather amid glitz and glamour to recognize and celebrate outstanding film achievements over the past year.

I’d say it was a successful Oscar’s and it was a night that was a long time coming. Rock joked: “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties; I wasn’t invited”.

“I didn’t see one person wearing the brown ribbon”, he said. But he said he could not lose another job to Kevin Hart, another black comedian and actor. But his friend and “Titanic” co-star, actress Kate Winslet, could not hide her excitement for DiCaprio and his big win for his lead role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2015 film “The Revenant” – and her emotional reaction was caught on camera.

As Chris Rock took the stage at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, the biggest question on the audience’s mind was how he would address the recent discussions of racial discrimination in Hollywood. About 20 protesters allied with Sharpton’s National Action Network gathered outside ABC’s NY studios, shouting “No justice, no peace!”

The Best Picture victory for “Spotlight” and a sixth Oscar for “Mad Max: Fury Road” for best sound mixing also topped Twitter’s list for most social media buzz.

Some entertainers boycotted the Oscars because there were no people of color among acting nominees. “No Asian actress has won an Oscar in 58 years, and it’s been 54 years since a Latina took home an Academy Award”, the Los Angeles Times reported.
