Hollywood’s brightest actors and filmmakers once again fought for survival, success and recognition at last night’s 73rd Golden Globe Awards.
Leonardo DiCaprio on stage with the cast and crew of The Revenant which won Best Motion Picture Drama.
“The Revenant” also brought a directing prize for Alejandro Inarritu, who recalled the long arduous shoot in sub-zero temperatures. The two films were also part of the DIFF line-up. It was her first nomination and first win. He has been nominated for Oscars a total of four times, and he has yet to walk away with one. Critics darlings “Carol” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” were surprisingly shut out as well.
Gervais also slammed NBC, the network that aired the award show, saying it was “the only network with zero nominations”.
The awards season whirlwind seems to get bigger every year with more parties, events and publicity – so what keeps the stars running? Thank you. What an incredible honor.
Despite some outliers in the nominee ranks, the film acting awards went to a more expected lot.
“They were after the authentic looks”, she said. “She’s amusing and hilarious and will win many things”. The night is split in two categories: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, which allows less competition. Some of the presenters of this year’s celebration include past winners of the Globes, such as Kate Hudson, Eddie Redmayne, Channing Tatum, and Kurt Russell.
Jennifer Lawrence won her third Golden Globe Award, for her portrayal of the title character in writer-director David O. Russell’s ‘Joy, ‘ in the Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy – Actress category. The crowd greeted his win with a standing ovation.
Other shockers, “Mozart in the Jungle” won the Globe for Best TV Comedy Series, upsetting fan favorites like “Orange is the New Black” and “Veep”.
The next test for some will be the Oscars in February; those at the Golden Globes that don’t make feature films that are released in theaters aren’t eligible.
In his acceptance speech, the actor dedicated his award to the Native Americans represented in the film and indigenous communities across the world. Comedian Gervais has already apologized to people who may potentially take offense to his tendency to launch insults toward the star-studded crowd.
