Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy celebrate Oscar nominations at ‘The Revenant’s

The film has already won three Golden Globes, and is nominated for BAFTA Film Awards in eight categories – including best actor, where DiCaprio will face competition from Eddie Redmayne, Michael Fassbender, Matt Damon and Bryan Cranston. Having previously been nominated four times consecutively without success, DeCaprio has been shortlisted alongside the film’s villain, Tom Hardy, who has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category, and its director, Alejandro G. Inararritu. Those include the top Golden Globe winners – Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” and Alejandro Inarritu’s “The Revenant” – along with “Spotlight”, “The Big Short” and “Room”.

Despite being nominated for an Academy Award in previous years, DiCaprio has so far missed out on being named a victor on the night.

Hip-hop hit movie “Straight Outta Compton” failed to get a place in the best picture category, and the Twitter hashtag #Oscarssowhite, which sprung up a year ago, was quickly revived.

The star reacted graciously to his nomination.

“Hollywood’s accepting the fact that Leo is a grown-up now and that his wayward randy bachelor days have calmed down”, said Tom O’Neil, founder of awards website goldderby.com. I think that certainly studios are used to making very safe bets, things that are going to bring in profits for their shareholders.

Aaron Sorkin, who was considered a frontrunner for a Best Screenplay nomination, was nowhere to be found for his work on “Steve Jobs”.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” well represented. Shutter Island, Revolutionary Road, Catch me if you can and Django Unchained all showed the best of Leo. Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out” earned a nomination for Best Animated Picture. Usually, that’s done by looking at Best Editing and Best Director.

His romantic “Romeo + Juliet” and “Titanic” roles went unrecognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and it was another 10 years before his obsessive-compulsive Hughes in “The Aviator” brought a second Oscar nod. Sylvester Stallone, meanwhile, is the sixth person to be nominated for playing the same role in two films. There’s no doubt that yet another year of an all-white Oscars, which is being widely criticized on Twitter, will be addressed by host Chris Rock at the Febt 28 telecast.
