“Carol” is up for best drama against Pioneer-era movie “The Revenant”, psychological thriller “Room“, Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight” and thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road”, a surprise contender in the category, which rarely sees a blockbuster action nominee.

For best actor in a drama, the nominees are Cranston, Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Will Smith for “Concussion“, a story about a pathologist who diagnosed degenerative brain disease in American football players.

In total, digital originals account for 12 nominations at this year’s Golden Globes, nearly double from last year’s list. In the acting prize, Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, and Lily Tomlin who have already gotten a nod each in movie category add another to their collection in TV department.

The nominees for best animated feature film are: “Anomalisa”, “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.

In other film news of geeky interest, The Martian received a nominee for best motion picture in a comedy/musical.
