It appears more and more are coming through undetected, safely jumping out of heavy goods vehicles when they reach the UK. But we are certain that a few get through.

The latest figures given by French police show a significant surge compared to official data: the number of those who comes to the United Kingdom illegally has doubled over the a year ago, reaching 6,400, according a report released by the chief inspector of borders and immigration last month.

Official figures show a continuing rise in the number of migrants found in the backs of trucks and cars in Britain, which more than doubled to 6400 previous year, the chief inspector of borders and immigration said in a report last month. “We know others are crossing in small boats or vans”, a regional security official said according to The Telegraph.

There have also been a spate of violent attacks against migrants in Calais, which have led many of its inhabitants to feel France is hostile towards them.

The president of the Calais region, Xavier Bertrand, has urged the French authorities to tackle the crisis.

During her first Prime Minister’s Question session at the House of Commons, May said she was committed to reducing the overall number of immigrant entries to the United Kingdom as one of the main pledges of the Brexit option. French officials say that it’s the possibility of getting employed.

After the European Union referendum, Mr Bertand said he wanted the 2003 Le Touquet treaty – which allows so-called “juxtaposed controls” on either side of the Channel – to be revoked.

While the total migrants entering the United Kingdom showed a slight drop of 2,000, the number of those who left the country was 22,000 less than past year, leading to a net migration of 333,000.

Earlier this month, local councils in the United Kingdom said they should be involved in assessing the needs of child migrants in Calais before they arrive in the UK.
