Lewis loses no-no in 9th in Rangers’ win
Lewis became the fifth Rangers pitcher to lose a no-hitter in the ninth inning. But Max Muncy hit a leadoff double in the ninth as Rangers right fielder Nomar Mazara reached the ball and the wall at the same time and was unable to make the catch. Rangers right fielder Nomar Mazara got to the fence at the same time as the ball, which deflected off his glove as he was crashing into the padded wall. Two batters later, Lewis lost his shutout as well when Rua came up just short on another attempt at a spectacular catch, racing in on a Coco Crisp liner, diving and having the ball go in and out of his glove. Earlier in the game, Mazara ran hard to rob Muncy of extra bases.

Daniel Mengden was simply sensational in his Coliseum debut, yet rendered a footnote Thursday when Texas starter Colby Lewis had a flawless game going with two outs in the eighth inning. He entered the game with a lifetime mark of 11-4 and a 2.90 ERA against the A’s, including a near no-hitter last September that Danny Valencia broke up with a leadoff double in the eighth.
Braves 7, Reds 2: Matt Wisler (3-7) allowed two runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings in his first win since May 20 at Philadelphia, ending a streak of four straight losing decisions. That’s the longest stretch any big league team has gone without being held hitless. But Lewis did need to wait until the seventh to get a lead, and after that it was just a matter of building anticipation over whether he would pitch the 24th game in major league history.
Kenny Rogers threw the last no-hitter for Texas, a ideal game against the Angels in 1994.
-Stephen Vogt got what he called “a mini All-Star break” with four games off, including three games in a row against left-handed pitching. The Rangers added another run that inning and then broke it open with three in the eighth, including Adrian Beltre’s two-run double off Fernando Rodriguez. Rangers manager Jeff Banister indicated before the game that his club likely will start either RHP Nick Martinez or LHP Cesar Ramos at St. Louis. One positive of late for the Athletics has been their offense, which has produced 31 runs over the last four contests and outscored Texas 25-22 over the first three games of the series.
Athletics: Oakland still hasn’t announced a starter for Saturday’s game against the Angels to replace LHP Sean Manaea, who’s on the DL with a strained left forearm. Nolan Ryan twice took no-hit bids 8 1-3 innings and Charlie Hough did it once. He’s pitched fewer than than five innings in each of his last two starts and three of his last four.
