Today from Mobile World Congress, LG introduced its latest smartphone, the LG G5, which will be available from Verizon this spring. First, you unlatch the bottom bezel of the phone and pull it out.

The G5’s detachable battery’s capacity stands at 2,800 mAh. “It wasn’t that long ago that the LG G series was the biggest of the premium phones, but now it’s more in the middle with a 5.3” 2560 x 1440, 554 ppi display. “We knew if it was just a matter of more megapixels in a display, it wouldn’t matter much”. The phone’s 2800mAh battery and up to 2TB of microSD removable storage are now accessible through the base of the phone – the entire base of the G5 slides out to reveal the battery. One of those cameras – the 16-megapixel main shooter -has a 78-degree field of view on its lens, while the second 8-megapixel camera has a 135-degree field of view – wider than the human eye’s. This means all of your apps will appear somewhere on the phone’s homescreen, I haven’t quite decided if this decision is a good move or simplicity taken too far. The always-on display will allow users to check time, notifications and battery status among other pieces of information. The company says that the LG Cam Plus will enhance the camera experience by offering auto focus, exposure lock, and give them a physical button for power, shutter and other photography features. It’s great to see this kind of functionality come standard with an Android phone – the similar Glance Screen has always been a mainstay on Windows phones, and was quietly a very convenient feature.

Users can also boost the phone’s music credentials with Bang & Olufsen speakers, via the LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY add-on.

The module also adds 1200mAh battery to the phone. The module also doubles as a Hi-Fi DAC, which can be connected to PCs or other smartphones as well, for that extra usability.

All LG Family accessories are attached by the user to the bottom of the phone’s aluminum unibody design. If you want to create your own VR content, there’s the LG 360 Cam, a 360-degree camera that uses back-to-back 200-degree angle 13 MP sensors.

LG also announced the Rolling Bot, which can take picture and control compatible home applicances. Four colours – silver, gold, pink and “titan” – are slated for worldwide release.
