LG SmartThingQ Hub is a smart home gateway, wireless speaker, and more
This cylindrical contraption looks a lot like an Amazon Echo, though it does have something unique going for itself: an LCD display. LG also chose to use a metal casing for the outer shell; consumers can choose either a Champagne Gold or a Black unit when it arrives on sale. LG plans to offer bundles that would include a Hub, and a variety of other sensors so customers can get started on putting together a smart home. Like Echo, the SmartThinQ Hub can stream music, either from iHeartRadio or from your personal collection, but there’s no cloud-connected, voice-activated AI housed within.

“The LG SmartThinQ Hub is just another example of the open approach we believe is the future of the smart home”, said Jo Seong-jin, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company.
There are some differences though, the main one being a 3.5-inch LCD display atop the SmartThinQ Hub, which can show information such as the time, local weather, your next calendar event and more.
LG has announced its newest smart home device before showing it off at CES 2016, meet the SmartThinQ Hub. LG makes a wide range of connected appliances including refrigerators, washing machines, and ovens, all of which can be controlled via the SmartThinq Hub and its companion smartphone app. LG announced its SmartThinq Sensors earlier this year, which can be applied to “normal” objects to make them smart, and those that are connected via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee can be controlled via the hub, too. (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s speakers, SmartThinQ hub features a large built-in speaker created to stream music. LG smart speaker can only be controlled via a smartphone as it lacks assistant voice capabilities.
As far as the types of sensors and devices LG’s hub will work with it’s a good start. The company supports any device that’s made atop the AllJoyn Alliance’s smart home framework.
