Liberal chief Justin Trudeau, 43, takes office with a gender-balanced cabinet

Trudeau is taking on the roles as Minister of Intergovernmental affairs and Minister of Youth.

Under the former government, scientists were limited by who they could talk to and what they could say.

Mr Trudeau, 43, kicked off his majority government with a few controversy by naming an equal number of men and women to a slimmed-down Cabinet, the first time gender parity has been achieved in Canada’s team of ministers.

When Trudeau won a majority government on October 19, much of the ensuing worldwide coverage focused on his physical appearance.

Trudeau is the second youngest prime minister of Canada.

True to his word, the new prime minister appointed a record 15 women to his 31-member Cabinet. It’s young as well, with most of the cabinet members under 50.

Justin Trudeau promised gender parity in his cabinet and he delivered.

New ministers include political rookies and veterans, while the diversity of the cabinet postings feature a muslim minister, an Inuit minister and an aboriginal minister.

“What needs to change, from a statute perspective is their salaries, so they get the full ministerial salaries, but they have full cabinet privileges around the cabinet table, and they sit on all the cabinet committees as full members of the committee”, Purchase said.

Indian-born Harjit Sajjan, the first Sikh lieutenant-colonel of the Canadian Armed Forces, with warfare experience in Bosnia in the 1990s and Afghanistan in the 2000s, has been appointed defense minister.

There was no public response from the Conservative Party of the oil and gas industry on Trudeau’s introduction.

Trudeau launched a thinly veiled attack on Harper by promising a less-controlling style, saying: “Government by Cabinet is back”.

Trudeau (BA ’94) is the third McGill alumnus to hold Canada’s highest seat, joining the exclusive company of Sir John Abbott, (BCL 1854) and Sir Wilfrid Laurier (BCL 1864).

He was elected after running on a plan to reject austerity and spend billions on infrastructure projects that would see Canada run a deficit for three years.

Newly named Cabinet minister Dominic LeBlanc, the leader of the government in the House of Commons, said Parliament will return December 3. Taxes on those who make more than $200,000 will go up as part of the plan.
