Licences of Uber drivers suspended in Australian state

On Monday, 40 Uber drivers in New South Wales were issued suspension notices, as the state government continues to crack down on the illegal operation of ride-sharing services.

As National Review’s Rich Lowry observed after Clinton’s remarks, “The ride-sharing service is synonymous with the new efficiency and convenience enabled by information technology, and is anathema to regulators and entrenched interests everywhere”.

Hire auto licence fees will also drop from AU$4,600 to AU$100.

So, should Queensland do the same?

Partitions or cameras are required in all for-hire vehicles for safety reasons, but most taxis aren’t able to accommodate cameras and thus must use partitions, which limit the size of the front cabin and make driving less comfortable.

In March, French police raided Uber’s Paris offices and two of its top executives have been ordered to stand trial over alleged non-compliance with France’s tax and competition laws. He said disability access will be unchanged.

Taxi app Uber has lashed out against planned proposals affecting cab drivers.

“This is why we have nothing against Hopin: because they provide their services only to legal taxi drivers”, Wenzl said.

“Overseas where the taxi industry has been deregulated, fares have gone up… when there is an oversupply of taxis and substitute services like UberX, this introduces inefficiencies to the system and that has to be factored into the price people pay”, he said.

That is really what Uber jumped on: Taking a fresh lateral look at the entire experience of a taxi ride from the customers point of view, rather than just improve over what was now available for customers in the market.

“We’ve had a lot of calls from states and territories interested on seeing the details and we’re happy to share”, Barr said. Politicians are given Cabcharge dockets that can be used only in traditional taxis.

The model implemented by the ACT has been hailed by Uber as a great example for how other Australian states, let alone numerous country’s Uber now operates in, can license the service yet at the same time cater to concerns put forward by existing taxi operators who are seeing their archaic, dated monopolies disrupted by the likes of Uber.

That’s a finding likely to apply to other communities, and conforms to the anecdotal information I gleaned from Uber drivers in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., this summer: They weren’t making much money, in part because Uber had signed up too many cars to serve a finite demand profitably.

Mr Rattenbury said new public transport options were important for Canberra.

Why did I take a cab instead of an Uber from the airport to begin with? Let’s hope other jurisdictions follow suit.

Consumer advocacy group CHOICE also welcomed the ACT government’s decision, following an investigation by the body last week which found UberX was safe, reliable and nine times out of 10 cheaper.
