Lightning kills 56 people, mostly farmworkers, in east India

At least 56 people were killed in lightning strikes at separate places of Bihar’s Aurangabad district over the last 24 hours.

India receives 80 percent of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season, generally between June and September.

At least 24 others were injured when thunderstorms and monsoon rains lashed 14 districts of the state. He told reporters that he expects the death toll to go up as reports come in from remote districts of the state. However, the toll in Bihar is unusually high.

Two each were killed in Bhojpur, Samastipur, Bhagalpur, Monghyr and Madhepura district and one each in West Champaran and Gaya district. “The crack due to lightning is 100 feet and 8 feet deep”, district magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agarwal confirmed.

In Patna and Rohtas, 16 people were injured by the lightning.

Over a dozen people were also injured in Kosi region of Saharsa.

Fifty three people died in Bihar.

Farmers are most often the victims of lightning strikes in India, which are common in the monsoon season. More than 2,500 people were killed by lightning in India in 2014, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, the most recent figures available.
