Ferguson was shot Sunday night when he and another guard approached a man who was attempting to steal three televisions from the Lilburn store.

Ferguson was “unresponsive and unconscious” when he was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.

Store surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect, and once those pictures were published on ajc.com and aired on television, tipsters began calling police.

Lilburn police made an arrest in the Sunday night fatal shooting of a security guard at an Atlanta metro area Wal-Mart.

Jaseramie Dion “JD” Ferguson had been on the job seven months when he and another Walmart worker came across the suspected shoplifter at the Walmart in Lilburn, Georgia, police said. He wanted to be a police officer.

Just before 9 p.m. Ferguson and another employee noticed a man trying to leave the store with three flat screen TVs he hadn’t paid for.

Ferguson is survived by his wife, Tiana, son, Jordan, and two daughters, Aryana, and Ava.
