A Mary Poppins sequel to the 1964 Disney classic will feature Emily Blunt as the magical nanny.
Mary Poppins will be back on the big screen with a sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns. The Disney Music Group encompasses the Walt Disney Records and Hollywood Records labels, as well as Disney Music Publishing.
Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda will join Blunt in the movie, which will be helmed by Into the Woods director Rob Marshall and written by Finding Neverland scribe David Magee, the studio announced on Tuesday. But that hasn’t quelled the company’s enthusiasm to return to the well of children’s fantasy and magical nannies, with today bringing word that Mary Poppins Returns has snapped up a December 25, 2018 release date.
The same production team that created “Into the Woods” will be reuniting with this new project as it will be produced by Marshall, Emmy victor and Golden Globe® nominee John DeLuca and Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award® nominee and Golden Globe victor Marc Platt. PL Travers’ wrote seven additional Mary Poppins books, which she published between 1935 and 1988. Meanwhile, new original songs are scored by Marc Shaiman and Tony Award victor Scott Wittman. She and her friend Jack will help the family see the joy and wonders of life despite tragedy.
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen”, he said. With us is Emily Grove who plays Mary Poppins and Samuel Floyd who plays Bert.
