Lincoln revives the Continental, with eye on China

The brand says its new “serene fullsize sedan” will deliver “quiet luxury” to the upcoming owners that will be part of the first and second largest auto markets on earth (China and America, making the swap when it comes to the luxury segment alone) starting this fall. Ford held its press conference later Monday morning than usual so that Seacrest, host of the long-running show “American Idol”, of which Ford is a prominent sponsor, could make it after flying to Detroit from Sunday night’s Golden Globes broadcast in Hollywood.

What it’s retained from the prototype are features that attracted big crowds past year, including button operated door handles that are baked in to the chrome beltline that runs along the base of the windows.

For most of Lincoln’s 99-year history, the Continental was the pinnacle of luxury, the auto of kings and presidents.

The Continental is powered by a new, 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

Adaptive steering will also be available on the Lincoln Continental, along with three-way adaptive suspension settings. A 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 and a naturally aspirant 3.7-liter V-6 will also be available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

A pre-collision system keeps the Continental’s passengers safe should the unexpected happen while Pedestrian Detection protects others that aren’t as fortunate to be riding in its cabin.

Effortless assistance for the daily commute is available with optional adaptive cruise control, which can automatically slow Continental in stop-and-go traffic – resuming speed when traffic clears.

The vehicle is liberally equipped with driver-assist technologies from a lane keeping system to a mechanism that takes the sweat out of parking.

Particular attention has been paid to the interior of the Continental, with the front seats inspired by those in private jets and offering an electric 30-way adjustment range at the front, while massage, heating and cooling functions feature on both the front and rear seats. The streamlined interior design provides generous rear legroom as well, which we’d expect from a full-size sedan. A gentle pull of the handle, and the E-latch door releases pop the doors open.

Innovations in managing vehicle noise and vibration, including Active Noise Control and acoustic laminated glass create a quiet, comfortable environment conducive to conversation or contemplation.

All models feature new design details.

Inside the Continental, you’ll find opulence including leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped console and instrument panel, genuine wood and metal inlays, and stitching that is specified to six or seven stitches per inch. He said that Lincoln’s comeback is “a journey” that’s only four years old and that he’s pleased with the results so far.
