Lindsey Graham drops out of Republican presidential race
“I was hoping not to have to make this call, but I think the time has come for me to suspend my campaign” Graham is quoted as saying by Politico during a conference call with supporters.

“I am suspending my campaign but never my commitment to achieving security through strength for the American people”, he said.
Liz Mair, a veteran GOP strategist who briefly worked on Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) campaign earlier this year, noted that Graham’s departure from the race frees up some state elected officials and activists to endorse another candidate. Especially if most of those voters want to join forces to stop Donald Trump but are receiving mixed signals about which candidate is the one to get the job done.
“Today most of my fellow candidates have come to recognize this is what’s needed to secure our homeland”, he said.
Despite being left off the main stage in all of the Republican debates, Graham maintained his penchant for mixing lighthearted wisecracks with doom and gloom pronouncements about the growing threat of terrorism.
Meanwhile, Graham, who faced six challengers during the GOP primary in his 2014 Senate re-election campaign, has just a 53 percent approval rating among South Carolina Republicans and 40 percent disapproval, according to the Winthrop poll.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has suspended his presidential campaign as of Monday.
“Republicans lost our most qualified, thoughtful, fearless and honest presidential candidate, not to mention the candidate with the best (and it seemed sometimes the only) sense of humor”. He registered below one per cent in most national polls and in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll of the Republican field.
“The centerpiece of my campaign has been securing our nation”.
While his race for the White House is over, many expect that he could be in the running to be a defense secretary if the Republicans win the White House. “I believe we’ve made enormous progress in this effort”, said Sen.
He’s a respected senator from an early primary state with obvious smarts and the kind of deep familiarity with national security policy that allows him to make specific proposals for fighting the Islamic State, while most of his rivals offer vague ideas (“carpet bombing”) that reveal their ignorance.
Despite that, it’s not impossible that Graham’s decision to quit now instead of waiting until after the SC primary will have some effect.

“He basically said it was clear he was not going to get into the upper tier of the debate”, said Hartley, a member of Graham’s national advisory committee.
