Line Launches Lightweight Version Of Its Chat App For Emerging Market Android

Messaging app Line is launching a new “lighweight” version of its service for emerging markets. The app retains LINE’s core features of text, sticker, and image-based communication.

According to a report in IB Times, LINE Lite not only uses less than 1MB storage space, but is the lightweight edition of the app that claims to enable rich communication accessible to users living in areas having poor network infrastructure or where lower data bandwidth is available.

It goes without saying that users will be able to exchange messages and photos for free with LINE Lite as well as LINE app users.

Moreover, it is nowhere near to WhatsApp, which reported a whopping 800 million active users per month globally in April 2015, with its popularity continuing to surge.

The app does not come with audio and video calls support, which are offered on the standard LINE messenger app to compete against VoIP clients like Microsoft’s Skype. When Line achieves top share in a given market, it launches additional services to increase the ways users can interact with its app, he added.

Line LITE will be launched in countries such as Algeria, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Vietnam and more regions will be included depending on the success and user response in these countries.

Don’t expect a lite app for Apple device owners, though. The app is extremely popular in Asia, like in Thailand where they actually sell t-shirts and plushies of LINE characters, and there is even a LINE cafe as well!
