Messi went down in the fourth minute after colliding with a Las Palmas defender and suffering a knock to his left knee.
The Camp Nou crowd of nearly 75,000 went from sharing a collective sigh to an eerie silence when Messi’s early scoring chance ended with him writhing on pitch.
A club spokesman confirmed to The Associated Press that Messi is “undergoing tests” at a local hospital, adding that the club would announce the results when they were available.
Barcelona bounced back from their recent defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo with a 2-1 victory at home to Las Palmas.
The former Liverpool striker made amends on 25 minutes as he rose to head home Sergi Roberto’s inch-perfect cross from the right to settle Barca’s nerves.
Suarez then had Barca fans biting their nails as he clutched his shoulder in pain towards the end of the first half, but the Uruguayan was able to continue.
The Catalans looked to have sealed the game seven minutes after the break through a magnificent team goal. Neymar stepped up to take it, but the Brazilian blazed his effort over the bar.

Neymar blazed a penalty over the crossbar after 66 minutes and Las Palmas pulled a goal back with a deflected Jonathan Viera strike two minutes from fulltime.
